so so. press conference at national youth council HQ at orchard.

eye opener.
many journalists.
speaking in chinese for Lian He Zao Bao and Capital 95.8FM.
the tape recorder thrusted inches away from your mouth. very intimidating.
the lights that CNA use. so unflattering.
prof leo tan. recommending the dry mee siam at the reception.
take pictures. many cameras and video recorders.
frozen smile.
eunice oslen looking fabulous. and being really chirpy and friendly. speaks eloquently about child prostitution, as one example.

youth.sg's coverage (clickity-click for report and pics) of the event spoke the most about us. we actually got the SYA medal of commendation. which is a award that is given to past SYA recipients that have continued their good work and sustained or improved their contributions to the youth scene and community. we got the SYA in 1999 and hence we got this.

ok some also saw my big face beside eunice oslen in the news on CNA and channel 8. so embarrassing.

anyway i'm glad for this award because volunteers, being volunteers don't get monetary rewards for their time and effort.
we volunteer because we care.
because we want to give back to the community.
we volunteer because it brings a smile to our hearts when we bring a smile to their face.
we volunteer because it is a great way to discover ourselves.
we volunteer because we know there are others out there who need our help.

and if we can give that, why not?

getting a somewhat tangible reward like SYA and getting the due recognition is something that doesn't come so often. and to get it is a tremendous honour and perhaps luck. because so many organizations in singapore do the same thing as us. just that we are a bigger club with more members and more projects. and they too deserve this. everyone, in fact, deserves it. so i would not just share this moment of "glory" (hurhur) with my fellow exco members and the long list of 600 members that we have, but to everyone who makes an effort to volunteer his/her time to make someone else smile.
